As soon as Ivana and Belicia started high school, I began to research options for possible steps after high school. I looked into college options, trying to determine whether there were ways for my girls, who were not yet even teenagers, to do college at home.

I also considered many options for the girls beyond the usual college track. These included vocational training, internships, volunteering, alternative pathways to law, serving with missionary families we knew all over the world, and letting the girls spend a good amount of time with, and learn from, women who were gifted in various areas—essentially an in-home apprenticeship.

During that time, I bumped into a book about accelerated distance learning. The book introduced me to some viable options that excited me. First, I needed to watch my girls and see what their unique passions and skill sets were, and how they learned in terms of interests and goals.

It was a bonus that my husband happened to be an entrepreneur and business owner. We were able to regularly include the girls in Jan’s ventures. The girls were able to go to the office and help with some basic tasks like bookkeeping, filing, cleaning, and phone calls. Jan gave the girls such great support and encouraged them to start their own companies, be entrepreneurs, and reach for the stars.
